Happy 40th Anniversary, Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La. 

Golden Sands Resorts celebrates 40 years of hospitality excellence on 15 March 2020. Golden Sands Resort was the first 4-star resort in Penang  The hotel opened its doors back on 15 March 2020 and the opening was graced by the presence of the late Tun Hussein Onn Jaafar, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. The hotel started with 268 rooms and as the hotel's popularity grew, more rooms were added. In 1987, the hotel expanded its room count to a massive 387 rooms and suites. 

Golden Sands Resort is the only 4-star resort in Penang that has 2 lagoon shaped swimming pool and Splash Zone - a mini water park with other facilities and attractions like an outdoor jacuzzi, gymnasium, Cool Lounge, bar by the pool, Garden Cafe, and Sigi's Bar & Grill by the beach.

The resort has the highest number of guestrooms on its higher floors facing the Straits of Malacca and is surrounded by 8 acres of beautiful tropical gardens.

The major milestone was celebrated with the unveiling of a giant card measuring 12 feet high and 20 feet wide at the hotel's lobby. The giant card, made entirely from recycled newspapers and wood frames, was a community project which was spearheaded by the hotel together with volunteers consisting of USM undergraduates and students from nearby schools. It took them 29 days to transform the 30kg of old newspapers into A3 sized papers.

This project was done in-line with environmental protection for sustainable living. No machinery was involved in the making, thus reflecting the reduction of carbon footprint pledge and ISO18001 environmental standard which the resort adheres to.

The artwork is done by Mr. Lee Weng Khim from Penang Water Colour Society and it took him 2 days to complete it. 

Guests were given the opportunity to write their well wishes which was then placed on the giant card. 

Some of the long-serving staffs of the resort. One of them was with the resort ever since the beginning. That's 40 years with the resort. Wow! That's an accomplishment!
