Straits Nyonya & Classic European Dishes at E&O Hotel Penang

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is well-known for its beautiful colonial style architecture with a touch of luxurious elegance and charm. The Heritage Wing of the hotel had just recently reopened after refurbishment works and the stunning reveal was gorgeous. Among the brand new dining experience is Java Tree.

Named after the iconic java tree which can be spotted at the garden area of the hotel’s promenade. The tree was planted even before the establishment of the hotel back in 1885 and has surely became a significance part of the hotel.

Java Tree welcomes you to a relaxing dining set in classic elegance. Get ready to pamper your palate to a burst of delightful flavours as Java Tree serves Straits Nyonya cuisines and classic European dishes. 

Start off with some appetizing Nyonya starters such as Blackened Top Hats or familiarly known as Pie Tee. These bites are made consisting of pastry shell filled with a mix of jicama, carrot, cuttlefish, shredded egg and salmon roe. The Otak-otak is a must try. Made from local mackerel, coconut cream, turmeric and kaffir lime. The fragrant aroma and taste on every bit is just a pure indulgence.

When it comes to the mains, the Pineapple Prawn Curry sure does catches the attention. Fresh juicy succulent deep-sea tiger prawns cooked in creamy curry with pineapples. A mix of tangy sourness, sweet and mild spicy kick. The Pais Buah Keluak offers a rich and complex taste. Grilled snapper, Asian truffle and a blend of Nyonya spices wrapped in banana leaf parcel.

For Nyonya desserts, sink your teeth into mouth-watering sweet treats like Sago Gula Melaka made from sago pearls in coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. The other to try is the Apom Bokwa -traditional Nyonya pancake served with banana gravy.

Begin your classic European indulgence with Homemade Gravlax - marinated in dill mustard dressing. A refreshing Waldorf Salad of classic apple salad, candied walnut, glazed apple and fresh grapes.

Enjoy a hearty serving of French Onion Soup loaded with caramelized onion in beef stock enjoyed with gratinated gruyere on toast. That nice deep sweet flavour leaves you wanting more.

For those who love beef, don’t miss out on the Beef Wellington. Bite into the juicy tender beef tenderloin wrapped in crispy flaky puff pastry. Served with baby vegetables and neutral jus. The other beef dish available is the Beef Bourguignon. Appealingly presented with the slow braised beef in red wine, pomme mousseline, baby carrot, sugar snaps, pearl onion, mushroom and beef bacon.

Apart from the poultry options, the Salted Cod Fillet sure is a nice favourite. Poached in milk and served on whole grain mustard mash, baby spinach, topped with poached egg and hollandaise sauce. 

Now here comes the sweet surprise. For those having a sweet tooth, the dessert trolley is a magnet to your eyes and stomach. Delicious variety of cakes and other irresistible desserts available on the trolley to choose from. 

This is sure one of its kind.
