Initiated
by the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery and co-organised by the Penang State Museum Board and the Global Chinese Arts & Culture Society, the exhibition "Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze: An Elite Malaysian Painting Exchange Exhibition 2026"
will be held in June 2026 at the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery’s Level 7 Special
Exhibition Hall. As one of the gallery’s key initiatives since its
establishment, the exhibition reflects its clear and long-term cultural vision:
to build an internationally oriented art platform in Malaysia, foster cultural
understanding through artistic exchange, and continuously advance the
philosophy of “Art for Peace.”
While Malaysia’s rich, multicultural landscape has
long nurtured artistic expressions that blend local heritage with a
contemporary spirit, the country has lacked a consistent platform for
international dialogue. By establishing this space in Penang, the Lin Xiang
Xiong Art Gallery aims to bridge the gap between Malaysia and the international
art world, ensuring that the creativity and cultural vitality of Malaysian
contemporary art are recognised on a wider scale.
Driven
by this mission, ‘Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze’ launches as a nationwide open
call bringing together outstanding artists from
different states, ethnic communities, and cultural backgrounds across Malaysia.
Featuring approximately 60 to 80 paintings, the exhibition will present the
richness, diversity and distinctive character of contemporary Malaysian
painting through the juxtaposition and exchange of varied artistic languages.
For the organisers, the exhibition is more than a presentation of artworks; it
is a cultural practice that uses art as a means to foster understanding,
respect, and dialogue, echoing the gallery’s long-standing commitment to Art
for Peace.
The exhibition also
highlights the importance of cross-institutional collaboration. By partnering
with the Penang State Museum Board and the Global Chinese Arts & Culture
Society, the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery aims to elevate the professionalism
and public reach of the exhibition, positioning Penang as a key hub for
regional cultural exchange.
Professor Lin Xiang Xiong, founder of the Gallery said, "While art may not
directly change the world, it has the power to transform the way people
understand one another. Through visual language and aesthetic experience, art
transcends the boundaries of language, culture, and background, fostering
deeper resonance and meaningful communication. To me, ‘Art for Peace’ is not
merely a slogan, but a sustained cultural practice. “Equatorial Art, Nanyang
Breeze” is not only a painting exchange exhibition, but a tangible expression
of this cultural vision, one that invites artists, the public, and cultural
institutions to participate in shaping an open, evolving, and future-oriented
artistic ecosystem.”
Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze: Malaysian Painting
Elite Exchange Exhibition 2026 is currently open for submissions. The
organisers warmly invite artists across Malaysia to participate and contribute
to showcasing the diverse expressions of contemporary Malaysian painting. All
submitted works will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of art critics and
experts from both
the East and the West, reflecting the
exhibition’s professional standards and cross-cultural perspective. A list of
selected artists will be announced in due course, after which selected
